Ink to Screen is a boutique film and television development house based in Australia with an innovative approach and strong relationships with international associates. The process of adapting stories from the page to the screen can be daunting for many writers. Ink to Screen specialises in extracting the unique, core elements of a story as written on the page and developing them into viable assets for film, television and interactive media. From industry ‘pitches’ through to completed screenplays; from pre-production through to industry marketing, Ink to Screen works with credited producers to help writers and filmmakers get their project seen by the people who make the decisions.

Film & TV Development

Development

Whether you are developing a feature film or a TV series, the first and most important thing is to be crystal clear about the story you are trying to tell. Ideally, this would be done before even attempting to adapt it into full screenplay. Ink to Screen was set up for this purpose. We analyse, extract and develop the core concepts, characters and narrative arcs of your story and create a pitching tool suited to the digital age, while still respecting and meeting traditional industry formats, standards and expectations.

FAQ

Do I need a Producer?

Unless you intend to produce the film by yourself, you will need a producer. Producing is a specialised field and if you are a new filmmaker you will likely need to engage the services of an experienced producer. This is where we can help. Once a producer is attached to,your project, you can then concentrate on writing, if you wish, and let us and the producer worry about everything else!

At what stage should I send my script to potential producers/investors/ distributors/exhibitors?

There are no hard and fast answers to this question. However, we can ensure that your project is presented in the best possible shape to grab the attention of whoever you or we send it to. Traditionally, this would mean taking the project through several drafts; however this approach is often a waste of time and effort if the project is not what they are looking for. We prefer to complete a full assessment first, and develop and refine your project to a high standard, to ensure it is completely ready for presentation before submitting it.

what does it take for a book to become a movie?

Are you wondering what your book needs to be made into a movie? Is there a secret formula to get your story noticed by Hollywood? We think so. For a book to be made into a movie, it first must be a good story that’s told well. It’s simple but true. Literary folks love to debate if the plot, characters, or setting are most important, but the reality is that the best books balance all three and are enticingly written. If you believe you have a good story, we can help you tell it well.

I have a great idea for a film…where to I go from here?

You will need to develop it, either by writing it yourself or hiring someone to write it for you. In order to progress a novel to film, TV or animation, you would also need an experienced film producer on board. If you plan to approach a producer alone, you will need to do some research on which producer might be best suited to your project, but there is no guarantee they will read an unsolicited submission. We can help you with this challenging process.

Can I submit an unsolicited screenplay to a production company?

It can be extremely difficult to engage with a producer from a cold call if you don’t have a prior relationship, with some production companies not accepting any unsolicited projects at all. Firstly, research the local production companies to get an idea of who is producing projects similar to yours, as it might be better to target these particular ones with your project. In addition, look up various companies nationally that tend to produce projects in the same budget range, tone, etc. as yours. Or else, take the stress out of the process and let us do it for you.
