NSW Entrants Will Compete Against Filmmakers in 100 Cities Worldwide

SYDNEY/August 4, 2011— The 48 Hour Film Project will be held the weekend of September 23-25, 2011.  Festival producers, in association with Parramatta City Council, invite filmmakers from all over NSW to compete. Cash prizes and international exposure await the winners. Teams are admitted on a first-come, first-served basis and competition registration is now open at www.48hourfilm.com/newsouthwales.

Producer Tom Papas, said: “We are delighted to stage the NSW competition in Greater Western Sydney. Parramatta City Council has been very generous in donating one of the largest cash prizes for a film competition anywhere in Australia. We encourage filmmakers from NSW, and particularly Greater Western Sydney, to get involved and get their work screened and on the map.”

First prize for the NSW competition is the Parramatta Prize worth $8000.00 cash. In addition, a representative from the winning team will be flown to the US to show their film to an international audience and compete in the world championships. The 14 best films from the championships will be shown at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival – Short Film Corner.

The 48 Hour Film Project is the world’s largest timed filmmaking competition. Some 40,000 entrants in more than 100 cities including New York, Beijing, Karachi, Johannesburg and Paris compete to write, shoot, and edit a short film in just 48 hours.

The competition starts promptly at 7 p.m. Friday, 23rd September 2011. Participating teams will be given a genre, a character, a prop, and a line of dialogue that they must work into their film. Teams are responsible for putting together a cast and crew, as well as securing equipment, locations, and costumes. They have only 48 hours to produce and hand in, or upload a 4 to 7-minute film by 7 p.m., 25th September 2011. Public screenings of entries will be held Sunday, 9th October at Riverside Theatres in Parramatta. The free public screenings will be part of a tantalizing weekend of food, music and chalk art as Parramatta celebrates the Crave Sydney International Food Festival. The NSW winners will be announced at the awards ceremony that same night beginning at 6 p.m.

The 48 Hour Film Project’s mission is to advance filmmaking and promote filmmakers. The tight 48-hour deadline puts the focus squarely on the filmmaking. The competition emphasizes building communities of local creative people, facilitating making new connections, showcasing skills, and celebrating what creativity and teamwork can accomplish in just one weekend.
