On Wednesday, director Steven Soderbergh’s shot-on-iPhone film called “Unsane” premiered at a film festival in Berlin.
In a conversation with the press, Soderbergh explained the benefits of using an iPhone to shoot the psychological thriller. He also said that it will be difficult to go back to traditional film-making after filming with an iPhone.
The iPhone’s video quality and flexibility allowed them to get fantastic shots when shooting the film. The built-in display and portable form-factor also allows directors to go from watching a rehearsal to filming a new scene. In a statement, Soderbergh said:
“The gap now between the idea and the execution of the idea is just shrinking and this means you get to try out more ideas so I wish I’d had this equipment when I was 15.”
However, the iPhone does have a few drawbacks. For instance, the device is very sensitive to vibrations and because of that, the image quality must be reduced when providing hardware or software-based stabilization.
